Projects: Community Integrated Sexual Health Initiative (CISHI)
CISHI aims to learn from the work with Church leaders and African men in the context of HIV/AIDS and sexual health in North West London. CISHI is a three year project funded by the Kings Fund (2007-2010).

The context of CISHI involves working with Church leaders from Pentecostal churches and targeting African men mainly from Zambian, Zimbabwean, Ugandan and Kenyan communities who attend these churches in the Northwest Sector of London. The characteristics of targeted users are therefore divided into two, the Church leaders and African men.

What we would like to learn from CISHI

  • We would like to find out how Church leaders may be motivated to take up HIV/AIDS peer education training more especially those who are resistant or unwilling. We are also interested in looking at what makes the willing ones to participate in HIV/AIDS and sexual health work. We would like also to identify the level of knowledge around HIV/AIDS and sexual health among church leaders.
  • CISHI may provide some answers around the beliefs, myths and attitudes of Church leaders around HIV/AIDS and sexual health. We would like also to learn more about being ‘blessed’’. What does this mean in the context of HIV/AIDS and sexual health?
  • This project may provide answers to why most African men tend to trust Church leaders more than other community leaders and health workers. This may also provide an insight into what Church leaders could do for African men.
  • We would like also to find out the reasons why African men present late for HIV testing and screening for other sexually transmitted infections. We are also interested in looking at their level of knowledge around HIV/AIDS and sexual health.

The project activities include peer education training and outreach work.
